Located on the San Francisco waterfront, The Canyon is a sculptural mixed-use tower shaped like a carved landform beside the bay. Inspired by Californian rock formations, it features a diagonal void at ground level that creates a lush pedestrian canyon connecting housing, offices and public space.
The red-brown façade of glass-fibre reinforced concrete gives the tower a layered, geological expression. Elevated foundations anticipate sea-level rise while the integrated bay-water system provides sustainable heating and cooling. Landscaped terraces and open connections to the surrounding masterplan strengthen the sense of community and movement.
Developed at MVRDV, The Canyon is part of the Mission Rock masterplan, realised in collaboration with Studio Gang, Henning Larsen and WORKac. The project explores a balance between architecture and terrain, where urban life and natural reference meet in a grounded yet dynamic gesture.
